What is Style?

What is Style?

Everyone has style.

No, really!

The word style isn’t just a buzzword used by the fashion industry. I’m going to grab the first “style” definition listed in the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Here it is:

1.a: a particular manner or technique by which something is done, created, or performed. (a unique style of horseback riding; the classical style of dance)

In this blog, the definition of personal style that I will use is this one: the manner in which you present your physical self.

Say that we live in a town where everyone gets dressed every day. I know that sounds terrible, but work with me here. πŸ™‚

  • If you work at home, it might mean slipping a button-up shirt on with your leggings, so you look presentable for your next Zoom meeting.
  • If you’re a stay-at-home mom with kids, you may not even have time to change your clothes until lunchtime! But you’ll likely choose something comfy and dirt-resistant.
  • If you’re going to a party, you might choose a frilly dress when you normally wear suits every day.

In each of these scenarios, you’re free to exercise some degree of personal style. However, what you put on your body or face is not always a choice. If your employer requires you to wear a uniform, chances are, you’ll wear it as long as you want to keep that job. (If you’re in that situation, experiment with accessories to see what you can get away with.)
